Primera Project Recognized with 2015 Illuminating Engineering Society Merit Award

The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) recently announced their 2015 Illumination Award Merit recipients and we could not be prouder that our Lighting Studio Manager, Deborah Steimel-Clair made the list for her work on our Galewood Elementary school project! The IES Illumination Awards program recognizes individuals for professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design. The Galewood project was a new construction elementary school where Primera provided electrical and lighting design.

Galewood was the second new construction elementary school to originate from a $98M grant and was also Primera’s second collaboration on a new construction project with UNO Charter Schools. Design and construction was completed on a very aggressive 10-month schedule, but despite the fast pace, our team created a dynamic and aesthetic design, especially when it came to the lighting. Most notably, Primera designed the lighting scheme for the media center and gymnasium, both of which helped satisfy energy efficiency goals and helped the school achieve a LEED Silver certification.

Primera would like to congratulate Deborah and the rest of the IES Illumination Award winners. To view the complete list of all the winners please click here.

One of the most notable features of Galewood Elementary is the remarkable sloped roof on the southern end. The roof surface has small slit-like windows to let in natural light while glass walls enclose the space beneath, creating a two-story, multi-use space viewable from the outside, topped by a third floor library (left).
