Primera Celebrates State Road 249 Bridge Project Ribbon Cutting in Indiana

Earlier this month, members of Primera’s Transportation team attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new State Road 249 Bridge into the Ports of Indiana. Selected by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) LaPorte District, Primera provided construction engineering and inspection services for the bridge project on SR-249 over US-12, the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) rail line, Norfolk Southern (NS) Railroad, and Boundary Road. The project involved constructing a new bridge and widening the existing one within the Norfolk Southern Rail Yard.

State and local officials came together to celebrate the opening of the highway bridge, which will double the ocean cargo capacity for Indiana’s Lake Michigan port. Officially opened on November 6, this bridge marks a significant milestone in a multi-year project aimed at increasing capacity on the only public roadway linking the Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor with the Greater Chicago/Northern Indiana area. The project team’s efforts have provided a crucial piece of infrastructure that will support future growth for the port and Indiana’s economy.

The completion of the 1,200-foot structure paves the way for the next phases of the project, which include closing the old structure and reconstructing the second bridge. Once finished, the result will provide a much needed four-lane connection to the port.

Primera is honored to collaborate with team members from INDOT LaPorte District, Ports of Indiana, The Etica Group, BLN/Egis Group, and Burgess & Niple, in contributing to the port’s development and its future growth and expansion.
