Wolf Road Bridge Over I-80 Bridge Reconstruction

Primera provided engineering design services, including bridge and road improvements, at various locations within Region 1/District 1 of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). As part of our blanket contract, we were tasked with reconstructing Wolf Road Bridge over I-80 in Mokena, Illinois.

The existing structure was a four-span reinforced concrete deck on a steel girder superstructure with concrete stub abutments and hammerhead piers. The original scope of work included a deck replacement and bridge widening. However, during site visits and data review, Primera noted significant deterioration in the steel superstructure since the original Bridge Condition Report (BCR) was prepared. Due to these findings, IDOT requested Primera to perform a field inspection and prepare an updated BCR, allowing for more comprehensive documentation of the bridge condition and a detailed study of possible repair and rehabilitation options.

The approved alternative consisted of a total superstructure replacement and substructure widening. The scope of work included replacing the deck and steel superstructure, making the steel girders composite full length, removing and replacing the approach slab and slope wall, converting existing abutments to semi-integral abutments, and widening and repairing the substructure. Our Phase II design engineering services included preparing Type, Size, and Location (TS&L) plans; contract documents; plans, special provisions, and cost estimates (PSEs); and Maintenance of Traffic plans for the recommended improvements. Additional tasks also included structural analysis and design related to the superstructure replacement and substructure widening. Primera also provided providing Phase III construction support.
