On November 7th, 2024, the Primera Foundation hosted its inaugural Forward Focused: People, Places, and Possibilities fundraising event, at their Chicago office, in celebration of National STEAM Day, recognized annually on November 8th. The event was a resounding success, bringing together over 150 guests and raising nearly $60,000 in support of STEM education. This new initiative aimed to bring together professionals from the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry to promote the importance of STEM careers and support the future generation of engineers.
The evening began with a lively cocktail networking reception, where attendees had the opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals, industry leaders, and STEM enthusiasts. The reception set the stage for the main highlight of the event: an engaging and insightful panel discussion with industry experts.
The panel featured distinguished speakers including Ann Thompson from Related Midwest, Lori Healey of the Obama Foundation, Cassaundra Rouse from the Illinois Tollway, and Raymond Valadez, from Chicago’s 36th Ward office. The discussion was moderated by Erin Inman, President & CEO of Primera Engineers and President of the Primera Foundation and centered around the evolving landscape of infrastructure in Illinois and the critical role of STEM education in shaping the future.
Panelists shared their unique perspectives on pressing infrastructure needs, funding, the impact of STEM on their careers, the importance of mentorship, and the critical need for a talent pipeline. Lori Healey and Cassaundra Rouse both emphasized the value of mentorship, sharing personal anecdotes about getting students involved in their efforts. Ann Thompson emphasized that projects are a platform for change, and Raymond Valadez discussed future themes and innovations in Illinois infrastructure, including the public transit and a need for high speed rail locally. The discussion also touched on the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the AEC and STEM industries, with panelists stressing that it’s personal to their projects and practices.
The event included live Q&A, allowing attendees to engage directly with the panelists and gain further insights into the topics discussed. The thoughtful and dynamic exchange of ideas left a lasting impression on all who attended, underscoring the importance of STEM education and the collective effort needed to drive innovation and progress in the AEC industry.
The Forward Focused event not only celebrated the power of STEM to transform lives and communities but also provided valuable knowledge and connections for all participants. The funds raised will go towards scholarships, education, technology, and mentorship programs, furthering the Primera Foundation’s mission to support the next generation of engineers. Since its inception in 2019, the Primera Foundation has raised close to $250,000 thanks to its sponsors, STEM supporters, and volunteers!
