Primera provided civil engineering services for the redevelopment of Rosenblum Park including a very unique stormwater management design. The project is located on the previous site of South Shore High School at 75th Street and Constance Avenue in Chicago, Illinois.
The demolition of the existing high school allowed Primera to utilize the deep basement to create an infiltration basin. The concrete from the building was recycled and crushed onsite to a consistency of CA-1. The crushed concrete was used to backfill the basement and a sewer network was installed to distribute the inflow throughout the basin. The result was an infiltration basin that greatly reduced the peak discharge and volume of stormwater runoff into the overburdened sewer system. The substantial savings realized from Primera’s unique design was used by the client to purchase additional playground equipment.
The park improvements included the addition of artificial turf and natural turf sports fields, basketball and tennis courts, playground area with a spray feature, walking pathways, new ADA-compliant curb within the public right-of-way, drainage improvements, and a partial street vacation along Constance Avenue with a cul-de-sac. This project was permitted through Chicago’s Department of Water Management and the Department of Construction and Permits.
