Forward Focused 2025: Educate.Empower.Elevate

September 26, 2025

On September 24, 2025, the Primera Foundation hosted its 2nd Annual Forward Focused Fundraiser. This year’s event built on the incredible momentum of our inaugural gathering last November and continues our mission to support STEM education and inspire the next generation of engineers and architects.

The event raised more than $65,000 toward the Foundation’s mission, pushing our total fundraising efforts to over $300,000 since our founding in 2019. Centered around the theme “Educate. Empower. Elevate.” the evening featured a moderated panel exploring Chicago’s evolving education landscape, the future of STEM careers, and how we can collectively shape tomorrow’s workforce.

Distinguished panelists included Z Scott, President of Chicago State University; Dr. Miiri Kotche, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago; Krisann Rehbein, Executive Director of the Chicago ACE Mentor Program; and Dave Crosson, Senior Vice President at HNTB. The discussion, moderated by Erin Inman, President & CEO of Primera Engineers and President of the Primera Foundation, focused on bridging the gap between education and the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. Panelists shared personal stories, addressed challenges students face today, and emphasized the importance of mentorship, early exposure, and inclusive pathways to STEM careers.

The conversation was full of inspiring moments. President Scott reminded us of the critical role representation plays in shaping futures, stating, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” Her words underscored the importance of visibility and access in STEM fields. Dr. Kotche highlighted the creative side of engineering, noting, “Engineers aren’t just good at math and science, they’re creative because they solve complex problems every day.” Krisann added depth to the conversation around the importance of exposure to STEM careers and concepts at a young age. Finally, Dave emphasized the mutual commitment required in mentorship, sharing, “Mentorship is a two-way street. It works best when mentors and mentees are like-minded, genuinely invested, and eager to grow.”

The event also included a live Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage directly with the panelists and gain deeper insights into the topics discussed. The thoughtful and dynamic exchange of ideas left a lasting impression on all who attended, underscoring the importance of STEM education and the collective effort needed to drive innovation and progress in the AEC industry.

Forward Focused is more than a fundraiser, it’s a celebration of what’s possible when we invest in people and their potential. We’re grateful to our sponsors, volunteers, and supporters who make this event, and our mission, possible. Thank you all again!
