Primera provided Design Section Engineer (DSE) services for roadway and bridge rehabilitation along the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355) from I-55 to Butterfield Road in DuPage County. The Illinois Tollway initiated the project as part of a strategic effort to rehabilitate a 10-mile corridor ahead of the planned reconstruction of I-294, addressing pavement and structural deficiencies, accommodating anticipated traffic increases, and extending the corridor’s service life until future reconstruction. The project included preparation of contract plans and specifications, project-related permitting, and coordination with the Illinois Tollway and IDOT to meet applicable design standards and requirements. Primera led the design for mainline and ramp pavement rehabilitation, shoulder resurfacing, signage and pavement markings, lighting updates, maintenance of traffic staging, barrier warrant analysis, utility coordination, and drainage evaluations to support safe and efficient corridor operations.
In addition to roadway improvements, Primera performed structural inspections and prepared bridge condition reporting, rehabilitation, and widening designs for multiple structures along the corridor, including improvements to the northbound I-55 Exit Ramp F to northbound I-355. Primera developed maintenance of traffic plans that maintained roadway capacity during peak travel periods while utilizing night and weekend operations to minimize impacts to motorists and provide safe work zones during construction. The project also included a comprehensive Traffic Impact Study evaluating existing and future conditions along a 10-mile segment of I-355, identifying operational deficiencies and developing conceptual solutions to improve traffic flow and levels of service. A feasibility study for the I-355 and I-88 interchange further evaluated interim and long-term alternatives to address congestion, geometric constraints, and system performance along this critical Tollway corridor. Strategic staging and coordination helped support on-time project delivery with minimal disruption to the traveling public.
