Primera provided professional engineering services to renovate a 16,200-square-foot building into a new multicultural center at Illinois State University under a tight schedule. The center features adaptable spaces for programming and services, including student organization offices, event and meeting rooms, a kitchen, a meditation room, gathering spaces, administrative offices, and student support services. Input from campus stakeholders and other multicultural centers shaped the vision.
The scope included upgrading mechanical systems, renovating and adding restrooms, installing a catering kitchen, new fire protection, power, lighting, and data systems, all in compliance with University guidelines and codes. An expansion for mechanical equipment was added late in the project, but Primera expedited the design to meet the schedule, covering architectural, structural, and civil engineering.
Primera also designed structural elements for new windows, operable panel partitions, an exterior ramp, and evaluated and repaired the existing wood truss system for mechanical and fire protection installations. State-of-the-art lighting and controls were designed for energy savings, functionality, and flexibility, with multiple programmed scenes and advanced controls for maintenance and energy strategies.
The new facility supports research, faculty and staff affinity groups, and alumni engagement, aiming to nurture diversity and empower ISU students.
