This project involved the conversion of vehicular traffic flow from a northbound-only configuration on Pine Street, southbound-only configuration on Washington Street, and an eastbound-only configuration on 9th Street between Pine and Washington Street in Michigan City, Indiana. The goal of this project was to improve traffic flow, accessibility, and the business districts’ curb appeal as part of the larger Lake Michigan Gateway Implementation Strategy (LMGIS).
Primera’s scope of work included roadway design, lighting design, traffic signal design and construction inspection services. This project was unique in that the Owner required community buy-in and support, which Primera helped manage. Our community outreach for the project included contacting numerous local business and governmental agency stakeholders, including but not limited to the following: United States Post Office, LaPorte County Highway Department, Indiana Department of Transportation La Porte District, and the Central Office Railway Department. During several one-on-one meetings with stakeholders, the Primera team solicited input and listened to their concerns. In addition, Primera explained the project scope, estimated duration and schedule, as well as anticipated impacts to each stakeholder.
The Primera project team also held multiple public information sessions to further explain the purpose and intent of the project and to solicit meaningful insight and input from local residents and other businesses. This extensive communication and outreach effort resulted in the design and execution of a thoroughly planned and well-built project, with extensive community support and understanding.
