Primera was engaged in the relocation of substation equipment at a Plainfield site due to the widening of U.S. Route 30 and the addition of a new bike path by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). Two transformers had to be relocated further away from the street and required all new dead-end structures and 12kV reclosers to be installed for each transformer. The project scope included the design of all: plan views, section views, foundation designs, grounding design, conduit plans, cable and conduit schedules, and schematic and wiring diagrams as required.
Primera engineered this project to include sequenced construction plans to allow for one transformer to be replaced at a time to limit the impact on local utility customers. Construction and demolition drawings were provided for all: plan views, section views, foundation plans and details, grounding details, and wiring diagrams. New 12kV reclosers and structures were installed to connect 34kV and 12kV to the transformers, the SCADA RTU cabinet and radio antenna pole were replaced, a new grounding grid was developed and a new frontage fence line was installed.
This project had special considerations that Primera had to take into account when engineering the relocation, such as: the nonconventional property boundaries of the substation, the reduction of 30 feet of property space, the avoidance of existing structures, and the alignment with the relocated distribution poles. As a result, Primera designed an asymmetrical layout that provided many benefits for the ease of constructability while limiting outage time for each transformer.
