Wind Farm Substations
Primera was contracted to provide various services in connection with the design/build installation of a number of General Electric’s substations at various wind farms. Some of the projects included:
- Structural design services in connection with the design/build installation of the Alliant Energy Wind Farm Energy Substation in Wisconsin. The project required the installation of capacitor bank equipment, grounding transformers, 345 kV bus and switchgear steel structures, circuit breakers, a large GSU transformer, Zig-Zag Transformer and oil containment pit, 34kV bus and switchgear steel structures, DVARs, 70-foot-tall static masts, and a prefabricated control house.
- GE designed and constructed a collector substation for the Goat Mountain Wind Farm near Sterling, Texas. A total of six collector circuits were designed to enter the substation in underground PVC 30” below grade before being terminated in the substation. Primera was contracted to perform cable ampacity calculations on the incoming feeders to ensure that no overheating of the cables would occur.
- Primera provided the professional structural design services in connection with the design/build installation of the John Deere Wind Farm Energy Substation in Michigan. The project required the installation of capacitor bank equipment, grounding transformers, 161 kV bus and switchgear steel structures, circuit breakers, a large GSU transformer and oil containment pit, 34kV bus and switchgear steel structures, 50-foot-tall static masts, and a prefabricated control house.
- Primera provided structural analysis and design of substation structures including buses, supporting frames, drilled piers and transformer foundations for Fowler Ridge Substation in Benton County, Indiana.
